Decent work in cotton cultivation

Ergon has reviewed the Better Cotton Initiative’s (BCI) activities to promote decent work in India, Mali and Pakistan. The study emphasises the considerable challenges in implementing improvements in working conditions among smallholder producers. The study (funded by the Dutch Sustainability Initiative – IDH) also surveys the diverse methodologies adopted by BCI’s implementing partners to promote decent work. An accompanying good practice guide, authored by Kirsten Newitt, sets out practical activities being undertaken to promote decent work in cotton producer communities in the three countries. The intention is to publish the good practice guide in French, Portuguese, Turkish, and Chinese in 2014.
